Research Engineer

Your Role:

Tenable is looking for an Research Engineer to join our Vulnerability Detection team. This position will involve researching existing vulnerabilities, looking for new vulnerabilities, and developing checks/plugins to detect these vulnerabilities via our products. The development will be in Nessus Attack Scripting Language (NASL), although experience in NASL programming is not required.

Your Opportunity:

  • Diagnose, research, reproduce and mitigate defects as part of the Tenable Research and Development team
  • Develop plugins for the Nessus vulnerability scanner based on research findings
  • Research, develop and improve methods of detection for currently unsupported services and products
  • Research newly published vulnerabilities and security advisories in order to determine safe and reliable methods of detection and exploitation
  • Perform original research by looking for vulnerabilities in software popular with our customers, coordinating disclosures, and providing plugins to detect these findings

What you'll need:

  • Ability to operate independently with little supervision as well as collaborate and work with others
  • Ability to self-educate and keep up to date with current security trends and exploitation methods
  • Ability to work within a virtualized lab environment
  • Understanding of common security vulnerabilities, detection and exploitation techniques
  • Experience with git version control
  • Experience working with multiple operating systems (proficiency with Linux a must)
  • Knowledge on the operation and management of Network Services
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and able to frequently shift priorities as needed
  • Robust problem-solving skills, the ability to learn from doing, personal accountability, and a positive and professional attitude
  • In depth log analysis skills

And ideally:

  • B.S. degree in Computer Science or a related field
  • 2+ years of development experience
  • Database technologies and SQL knowledge (Oracle, MySQL, MSSQL, etc.)
  • Virtualization Technology (VMWare, Hyper-V, Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, Docker, etc.)
  • Some reverse engineering experience including basic binary analysis, packet capture analysis, and firmware analysis (using binwalk)
  • Experience with C, C++, Assembly (x86/x64 and/or ARM/ARM64) and scripting languages is desirable but not a must
  • Experience with CVSS scoring or vulnerability classification
  • Experience with systems administration and be comfortable working at the command line
  • Experience in Industry Security Standards (DISA, HIPAA, CIS, ISO 27001, etc)
  • Analysis of Network Capture Files with tools such as Wireshark, Bro
