Principal Software Engineer - Java, AWS, Kubernetes

Columbia | Maryland | United States

Your Role:

As a Principal Software Engineer at Tenable, you play a key role in the delivery of highly reliable, scalable, and maintainable systems. You will drive projects end-to- end, collaborating on product definitions with Product Managers, architecting and implementing technical solutions with talented
teams, and ensuring continued success even after deployment. You will lead and participate in design reviews, architecture discussions and other technical leader activities. You’re comfortable working independently as well as supporting other team members. You’re pragmatic, tenacious, and comfortable with ambiguity. You’ll be able to balance technical leadership and acumen with strong business judgment to make the right decisions about technology choices. You’ll strive for simplicity, while bringing technical insights into how to refine and improve the system, ultimately ensuring performance, stability, and an exceptional end user experience.

Your Opportunity:
  • Expertly implement designs using modern programming practices
  • Participate in the architecture and design of systems
  • Perform code reviews and ensure exceptional code quality
  • Drive innovation by contributing new ideas for our processes, tools, and technologies
  • Functionally decompose complex problems into simple, straightforward solutions
  • Serve as a technical lead on our most demanding, cross-functional projects
  • Fully and completely understand system interdependencies and limitations
  • Possess expert knowledge in performance, scalability, enterprise system architecture, and engineering best practices
  • Assist in the career development of others, actively mentoring individuals on advanced technical issues and helping managers guide the career growth of their team members
  • Exert technical influence over multiple teams, increasing their productivity and effectiveness by sharing your deep knowledge and experience
What you'll need:
  • 10+ years of relevant engineering experience
  • Demonstrable experience developing in languages such as: Java, Node.js, Groovy
  • Experience working on teams with heavy emphasis on DevOps, Automation, and Quality
  • Experience working in an Agile development environmentComfortable working with a remote team operating in multiple time zones
  • Exerience with a varity of data storage solutions (e.g. Elasticsearch, Dynamo, RDS, SQL)
  • Experience with fault tolerant message queuing/brokering systems (e.g. Kafka, SQS, Kinesis)
  • Experience with AWS or similar cloud platform (e.g. Google Cloud, Azure, OpenStack)
  • Experience with dependency injection concepts is necessary (e.g. Guice)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
