What’s it like being a Technical Support Intern at Tenable?
Hi, I’m James and this summer I’m working at Tenable’s HQ in Maryland as a Technical Support Intern. I’m a rising senior at Champlain College majoring in Computer Networking and Cybersecurity with a minor in Digital Forensics. I’ve had a couple internships in the past, but this summer I’m having fun with the Cyber Exposure company!
Tenable is a company with tons of opportunity. As a Tech Support Engineer Intern, I'm able to get hands-on experience working with clients to help resolve their tickets.
I come from a very technical background, and after learning with Tenable’s excellent training regimen, I was able to jump right into working on technical support cases. Prior to becoming a Tech Support Engineer Intern, I had used Nessus at the Champlain College Leahy Center for Digital Investigation, where I worked as a research assistant. I was practicing my red team/blue team skills by breaking into a computer using various pen testing tools and then patching all of the vulnerabilities. One of the tools I used to find any potential vulnerabilities was Nessus!
I ran a Nessus scan to see what exploitable vulnerabilities the computer had. Nessus can be used to find vulnerabilities on a system, and then patch them up. This scenario showcased the importance of how Nessus can help close the Cyber Exposure gap. Nessus made it even easier for me to find a way to patch the vulnerability and prevent it from being exploited.
I’ve only been working for a couple weeks at Tenable, but I can happily say that I’ve had plenty of laughs with my fellow Technical Support Engineers. As a Technical Support Intern, I have the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of Tenable’s flagship product, Nessus. I’ve learned a lot about the entire Tenable ecosystem and its three main products: Nessus, Tenable.io and Tenable.sc.
Once I got into the groove of things, intern life really started to pick up. I’ve met some really cool people and when I started working on support cases, it was brilliant! Sometimes it’s a stressful job, but a very rewarding one. Not only am I getting real-world hands-on experience here, but being able to interface with clients and use my soft skills to help mitigation is something I’ll be able to bring to the table when it’s time for me to become a working professional. Tenable is not only a company that I love working with, it’s a company that’s setting me up for success!
