Last week, Team Tenable ventured out from our Columbia, MD, headquarters to Las Vegas, for two of the most highly anticipated cybersecurity conferences of the year: Black Hat USA 2019 at The Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino and BSides Las Vegas at the Tuscany Suites Casino. The two conferences combined hosted well over 20,000 attendees! Whether you are a cyber practitioner, researcher, product specialist or customer, there was something specific to everyone’s interests at these security focused events.
Black Hat USA participants were provided with the very latest in research, development, and trends. Black Hat USA held four days of technical trainings (August 3-6) followed by the two-day main conference (August 7-8) featuring Briefings, Business Hall and Arsenal. Alive tool demonstration, at which researchers to showcased their latest discoveries, provided a hands-on experience.
Our Tenable recruiting team was stations just past the Arsenal demo gathering area in the Career Zone Hall, where our recruiters were answering questions and educating prospective candidates on the history of Tenable, our core values and our culture. We were pleased and proud to hear the overwhelming feedback and gratitude from practitioners and cybersecurity specialists telling us how much they love Nessus and currently use it in their workplace on a regular basis! They were also able to pick up some Tenable swag to bring back from Black Hat. We found this event to be very successful from a recruiting standpoint, and we came away with a better understanding where Tenable stands in the vulnerability management market.
BSidesLV — a smaller event, yet equally important to the infosec community — provided a two-day conference for security practitioners and those who are interested in entering the field of cybersecurity. The technical and academic talks at BSidesLV are given in the spirit of peer review and sharing new knowledge. Our team of recruiters took the time to meet individually with conference attendees in the Hire Ground hall for those who needed additional career guidance.
Our recruiters held resume reviews, gave interview tips and asked attendees about their technical strengths to help match them to opportunities that best aligned within their career aspirations. Matt Duren, Tenable’s Senior Manager of Talent Acquisition, spoke on a panel at Hire Ground during which panelists gave the audience a glimpse “Behind the Recruiting Curtain.” Matt and other members of the panel helped job seekers break down the walls between the candidate and recruiting process. Conferences like BSides not only support people in the security realm from an education standpoint, but they are also a great way for people to directly connect with hiring managers from a handful of companies that are hiring for their immediate opportunities and get noticed!
This year in particular at BSidesLV, we sponsored as the pool party swag sponsor. This gave us an opportunity to wind down from typical “conference chatter” and connect with attendees in a more casual environment and have a little fun! We gave out Tenable=-branded LED water squirters, slap koozies and miniature unicorn floaties which were a massive hit with the party goers!
Our four days in Las Vegas sure went by fast, but it was an exceptional week getting to engage with so many inspiring and thoughtful individuals in the information security community. While we recover from all the excitement that is Black Hat USA and BSidesLV, we will reflect as a company on the goals we have reached and the strides that were made to make it yet another successful event for The Cyber Exposure Company. Until next year, Vegas!
