Doing it for the Girls: A Global Effort
by Jennifer Cox
On October 12th, Tenable was represented by Edel Cooney, Kate O'Donnell, and myself at the AmCham organised event "Sparks in Leadership - Progressive Equality: Discussion not Monologue" in Dublin.
This event was focused around balance in business and the progression of women in leadership roles. We listened to some enlightening speakers including Dr. Tom Clonan (Journalist & School of Media, DIT) who recounted the strength and passion of the women in his life and their leadership skills, albeit focused on burning down post offices during the Irish revolution, to Fionnuala Meehan, (MD Google & VP EMEA Google Marketing Solutions) who discussed her experiences raising a family and climbing the corporate ladder between college applications and school appointments; and Brid Horan (30% Club Ireland, Director DCU & FBD) who claimed the place as the oldest in the room while offering a wealth of experience relating to corporate hurdles and imbalances of the past to the movement towards genuine equal opportunity in the current and future.
There is nothing quite like the empowerment of a room full of women supporting each other. With the day to day struggles of work/life balance becoming more evident, it was heartwarming to find that those at the top levels of their industry still have the same worries and concerns as those of us starting out. The next time we go we'll be sure to bring more of Tenable's male representation. The most vital aspect to supporting women in business is showing the support of the men they work with. With Tenable this support is strong and we relish the opportunity to demonstrate this whenever possible. The conversation has started now. There is no stopping us.
